Mahjong Tower builds its layouts upward instead of outward, and that single structural decision makes it the hardest mahjong solitaire on this site. In a flat layout you can see most of the board and your mistakes are recoverable. In a tower, tiles are stacked into tall structures modelled on iconic buildings, which means a large fraction of the board is hidden underneath other tiles at any moment, and clearing the wrong pair can bury a match several layers deep with no way back. The rules are standard, so there is nothing new to learn: pair identical tiles that are uncovered and open on a left or right edge, and keep going until the structure is dismantled. But the skill is different. You are not scanning a field, you are deciding in what order to take a building apart, which is closer to a logic puzzle than to a search. If you find ordinary mahjong solitaire too easy, this is the one to open.
How to play Mahjong Tower
- Study the tower before taking a pair; most of the tiles are hidden beneath others.
- Pair identical tiles that are uncovered and open on the left or right edge.
- Remove pairs to dismantle the structure layer by layer.
- Work from the top of the tower downward so you do not seal matches underneath.
- Clear every tile to bring the structure down.
Controls
- Desktop: Click a tile, then click its match.
- Mobile / tablet: Tap a tile, then tap its match.
Mahjong Tower tips & strategy
- Top-down is not a style preference here, it is the rule that keeps a tower winnable. Taking an easy pair from the base can seal a match three layers up.
- Before clearing a visible pair, ask what it uncovers. A pair that reveals nothing is usually a wasted move in a tall layout.
- With four copies of a tile, take the two highest in the structure. The lower pair will still be reachable later; the reverse is often not true.
- If a tower looks hopeless, restart early. Towers go unwinnable sooner and less visibly than flat layouts do.

Mahjong Tower FAQ
Why is Mahjong Tower harder than other mahjong solitaire?
The layouts are stacked upward, so much more of the board is hidden at any moment and a wrong early pair can bury a match several layers deep with no way to recover.
Is it four-player mahjong?
No. It is mahjong solitaire, the single-player pair-matching puzzle played with mahjong tiles.
What is the single most useful habit?
Clear from the top of the tower downward. Taking convenient pairs from the base is the most common way a tower becomes unwinnable.
Is it free to play?
Yes, free in the browser with no download.
