Road Designer is a browser-based street blueprint simulator where you lay out intersections and one-way streets to build a working road network. Each level presents a traffic-flow puzzle: draw a layout, then watch AI-driven cars try to navigate it, revealing jams or collisions you need to redesign around. The core loop is build, test, and refine until traffic moves smoothly.
How to play Road Designer
- Pan around the map using WASD to find open space for your road network.
- Draw roads and intersections, connecting them into a network that links traffic sources to destinations.
- Set streets as one-way where needed to control the direction of flow through junctions.
- Press G to snap your roads to the grid for cleaner, more precise layouts.
- Click the steering wheel icon to switch into drive mode and test your roads yourself, or let AI cars run through your network.
- Zoom in and out with the arrow keys or mouse scroll wheel to check junctions closely or view the whole map at once.
Controls
- Desktop: WASD to move/pan the camera, arrow keys or scroll wheel to zoom, G to toggle grid snapping, mouse to draw and click UI elements including the steering wheel icon to drive.
- Mobile / tablet: Touch controls: drag to draw roads and pan the map, pinch to zoom, tap the on-screen steering wheel icon to drive a car through your layout.
Road Designer tips & strategy
- Use grid snapping (G) when placing intersections so roads line up cleanly and don't leave awkward gaps that cause cars to stall.
- Set streets to one-way at busy junctions first — undirected two-way crossings are the most common source of gridlock.
- Zoom out often to check your whole network for bottlenecks before testing traffic flow.
- Test in drive mode yourself to feel where a junction is confusing, not just watch the AI cars.
- Keep entrances and exits to your network simple; overly complex junctions near the edges tend to back up fastest.
What makes Road Designer fun
The satisfaction comes from watching a stream of cars smoothly flow through a junction you designed by hand, and the quick build-test-fix loop that lets you immediately see whether a road change fixed or worsened traffic.
