Chess Classic is a browser-based rendition of the traditional two-player strategy board game, built in HTML5 by German developer Famobi. It follows the standard international chess ruleset on an 8x8 board, with rule-accurate handling of castling, en passant, and pawn promotion, plus automatic check and checkmate detection. Players can face a built-in computer opponent across six adjustable difficulty levels, from beginner-friendly to genuinely demanding, or share one device for local head-to-head matches. Selecting a piece highlights every legal destination square, which helps newer players avoid accidental blunders while still moving quickly. The board and piece color themes can be customized to taste. No installation, plugin, or account is needed — the game loads instantly in any modern desktop or mobile browser and responds equally well to mouse clicks or touch taps.
How to play Chess Classic
- Choose a mode: play against the built-in computer AI, or pass-and-play against a friend on the same device.
- If playing solo, pick one of six difficulty levels before the match starts.
- Click or tap a piece to select it — its legal moves are highlighted on the board.
- Click or tap a highlighted square to move the selected piece there, capturing any opposing piece on it.
- Checkmate the opponent's king to win the game.
- Special rules — castling, en passant, and pawn promotion — trigger automatically whenever the position allows them.
Controls
- Desktop: Click a piece to select it, then click a highlighted square to move it; click the piece again to deselect.
- Mobile / tablet: Tap a piece to select it, then tap a highlighted destination square to move; the board and pieces are sized for touch on phones and tablets.
Chess Classic tips & strategy
- Start on a lower difficulty level to get comfortable with piece movement and the legal-move highlights before raising the challenge.
- After selecting a piece, check every highlighted square — it shows all legal moves, including captures you might otherwise miss.
- Develop knights and bishops toward the center early rather than pushing edge pawns; central control opens more future options.
- Castle early when the position allows it so your king isn't left exposed in the middle of the board.
- In local two-player mode, agree on pacing beforehand since there's no forced clock unless the match format adds one.
- Watch for your opponent's undefended pieces after every AI move — the computer at higher difficulty will punish careless captures.
What makes Chess Classic fun
Six adjustable AI difficulty levels, a local two-player pass-and-play mode, legal-move highlighting for every selected piece, customizable board and piece color themes, a full standard chess rule set (castling, en passant, pawn promotion, check/checkmate detection), and a responsive HTML5 interface that runs with no download on both desktop and mobile browsers.
Chess Classic FAQ
Who made Chess Classic?
It was built by Famobi, a Cologne, Germany-based HTML5 game studio and publisher that develops and syndicates browser games to hosting sites worldwide.
Is Chess Classic multiplayer?
It offers local two-player pass-and-play on a single device. It does not include real-time online matchmaking against opponents over the internet — for that, dedicated chess servers are a better fit.
Can I adjust how hard the computer plays?
Yes. Before a solo match you can pick from six difficulty levels, letting the AI scale from casual and forgiving to genuinely challenging.
Do I need to download or install anything?
No. Chess Classic runs entirely in the browser using HTML5, so it loads instantly on desktop or mobile with no plugin, app install, or account required.
Does it follow official chess rules?
Yes. It implements the standard international ruleset, including castling, en passant captures, pawn promotion, and check/checkmate detection.
Is Chess Classic free to play?
Yes, it's free to play wherever it's embedded in-browser; some hosting pages may show advertising around the game frame.
