Mahjong Master 2 is the forgiving one, and that is a deliberate design choice rather than a shortcoming. It is a standard mahjong solitaire: remove pairs of free tiles from an intricate layout until the board is clear, with a tile counting as free when it is uncovered and open on the left or right. The difference is that it hands you automatic hints when you get stuck, which removes the single most frustrating thing about the genre, namely scanning a dense board for ninety seconds and finding nothing. For a lot of people that scan is the game; for a lot of others it is the reason they stopped playing. By putting the hint on tap, Mahjong Master 2 keeps the planning part, which is deciding which of several possible pairs to take, and strips out the searching part, which is just visual labour. The layouts still escalate in complexity as you progress, so it gets harder without ever getting tedious.

How to play Mahjong Master 2

1. Look for two identical tiles that are both uncovered and open on the left or right edge.
2. Click the two matching tiles to remove them.
3. Keep clearing to expose the layers underneath.
4. Use the automatic hints when you cannot find a legal pair.
5. Clear the entire layout to complete it and move on to a more complex one.

Mahjong Master 2 tips & strategy

• A hint tells you a legal move exists, not that it is the best one. When the hint offers a pair, check whether a different pair opens more of the board first.
• The planning skill that survives the hint system is choosing between matches. With four copies on the board, which two you take decides whether the other two stay reachable.
• Prioritise tiles at the top of stacks and at the ends of rows, because those unlock the most.
• If you are leaning on hints every move, drop back a difficulty. The game gets considerably more satisfying once you are finding most pairs yourself.
