The path must be clear of other tiles and may only turn a limited number of times, which is where all of the difficulty lives. A pair sitting right next to each other is trivial; a pair at opposite corners may be legal or illegal depending entirely on whether the route between them needs two bends or three. That makes it a route-finding puzzle rather than an excavation puzzle, and it exercises a genuinely different skill. The Halloween theme is the dressing, and the tiles are high-contrast enough to read quickly, which matters when you are tracing paths rather than spotting stacks.

1. Find two identical tiles in the grid.
2. Check whether a clear path can join them without crossing other tiles.

4. Select the two tiles to connect and clear them.
5. Keep clearing to open up routes for the pairs that remain.

• This is not mahjong solitaire. Nothing is stacked, so stop looking for free edges and start tracing routes.
• Clear the middle of the grid early. Every tile you remove from the centre opens routes for pairs that were previously unreachable.
• Edge and corner pairs are usually the hardest, because a route around the outside eats bend allowance quickly. Save them until the board has opened up.
• If a pair looks obviously matched but will not connect, count the bends. Three turns where two are allowed is the usual reason.
