2048 is a single-player sliding tile puzzle played on a 4x4 grid. Each move slides every tile on the board as far as possible in one direction, and when two tiles carrying the same number collide they merge into a single tile with double the value. After every move a new tile (2 or, occasionally, 4) appears in a random empty cell, and the core loop is to keep combining tiles upward toward the 2048 tile before the grid fills up and no legal moves remain.
How to play 2048
- Use the arrow keys (desktop) or swipe (touch) to slide all tiles on the 4x4 grid in one of four directions.
- Tiles slide as far as they can until they hit the edge of the grid or another tile.
- When two tiles showing the same number collide, they merge into one tile with the combined (doubled) value.
- After each move, a new tile with a value of 2 or 4 appears randomly in an empty cell.
- Keep merging tiles to build toward the 2048 tile; the run ends when the grid is full and no adjacent tiles share a value, leaving no legal move.
- You can keep playing past 2048 to chase higher tiles (4096, 8192, etc.) if the board stays open.
Controls
- Desktop: Arrow keys (or WASD in some versions) to slide tiles up, down, left, or right; mouse can be used for menu/restart buttons.
- Mobile / tablet: Swipe up, down, left, or right on the grid to slide tiles in that direction.
2048 tips & strategy
- Pick one corner (commonly a bottom corner) and try to keep your highest-value tile anchored there for the whole run.
- Build tiles in descending order along one edge or row so merges stay predictable instead of scattering high-value tiles across the board.
- Avoid moving in the direction that would break your corner/edge chain just to make one small merge — plan a move ahead.
- Try to limit yourself to two or three primary move directions (e.g., mostly up/left) so the board doesn't get chaotic.
- Don't rush merges for their own sake; an empty grid with no clear plan is more dangerous than a fuller grid with an organized chain.
What makes 2048 fun
The appeal is in the tension between simple rules (slide, merge, repeat) and the planning required to avoid getting boxed in — a short, replayable puzzle loop that's easy to learn but hard to consistently reach 2048 or beyond.
