Zombie Games — Free Zombie Survival, Shooter & Defense Games Online

Zombie games are one of the most searched corners of free browser gaming, and almost every big zombie name — Left 4 Dead, Resident Evil, Project Zomboid, Call of Duty Zombies — is a paid game on PC or console. That leaves a gap: people who just want to fight off a horde for ten minutes, right now, without buying or installing anything. That is what this collection is for. Below are zombie survival games, horde shooters, zombie tower defense, plants-vs-zombies-style lane defense and a few deliberately silly ragdoll ones, all playable free in your browser here on JoyForGame — no download, no install, no account. If you are looking for something to play through October, the undead are as close to a default Halloween pick as browser gaming has.

Games in this genre

Famous games that defined the genre

Plants vs. Zombies — PopCap released Plants vs. Zombies in 2009 and turned lane defense into a mainstream genre: you plant sunflowers for economy and peashooters to hold each lane while zombies shuffle toward your house. It is an EA-owned paid title and is not hosted here, but the lane-defense loop is well represented in free browser games. Play a plants-vs-zombies-style game here: Mutant Plants Vs Zombie →

Left 4 Dead 2 — Valve's 2009 co-op shooter sends four survivors through infested levels against constantly changing hordes. It is a paid game on Steam and not hosted here — for a free browser stand-in, the horde shooters in this collection cover the same run-and-gun pressure. Play a free horde shooter here: City of the Dead Zombie Shooter →

Call of Duty Zombies — Treyarch's round-based Zombies mode debuted in Call of Duty: World at War in 2008 and has appeared in the series ever since: board up windows, buy weapons, and survive escalating rounds. It only comes with a paid Call of Duty game, so it is not playable here. Play a free wave shooter here: Super Zombie Shooter →

Resident Evil — Capcom's Resident Evil arrived in 1996 and did more than anything else to popularize survival horror — scarce ammo, locked doors and undead in tight corridors. The series is paid on PC and console and is not hosted here. Play a free survival-horror-flavored game: Biozombie of Evil 2 →

Project Zomboid — The Indie Stone has developed this isometric zombie survival sim in early access since 2013, and it is the reference point for slow, systems-heavy survival: injuries, hunger, and a world that keeps decaying. A paid Steam title, not hosted here. Play a free browser survival game: Survival - Zombie Outbreak Multiplayer →

DayZ — DayZ started life in 2012 as a mod for ARMA 2 by Dean Hall before Bohemia Interactive shipped it as a standalone game, and it made open-world zombie survival against other players a genre of its own. Paid on PC and console, not hosted here. Play a free survival pick: Zombie Den: The Lone Survivor →

The Last of Us — Naughty Dog's 2013 PlayStation game is technically about people infected by a fungus rather than classic zombies, but it shaped how the whole genre tells stories about survival and scarcity. A paid console and PC title, not hosted here. Play a free survivor run: Zombie Survivor - The Last Run →

The main kinds of zombie game

The label covers several very different loops. Horde shooters put a gun in your hands and keep sending waves at you, so the skill is crowd control and reloading at the right moment. Survival zombie games care more about staying alive over time — scavenging, holding a position, keeping a base or a barricade intact. Zombie tower defense (and the lane-defense style popularized by Plants vs. Zombies) is about placement and economy rather than aim: you spend resources on defenders and let them do the shooting. Survivor-likes borrow from the bullet-heaven boom — your character auto-attacks while you dodge and pick upgrades between waves. And then there is the comedy end of the genre: ragdoll physics, cars, stickmen, and zombies used mostly as things to send flying.

How to survive longer against a horde

Most zombie games reward the same handful of habits. Keep moving and never let a crowd surround you — zombies are usually slower than you, so circling is stronger than standing and trading damage. Use doorways, corridors and chokepoints so a wide wave arrives a few at a time. Watch your ammo and reload during gaps, not while something is already on top of you. When upgrades are offered, damage and fire rate usually pay off earlier than health, because a horde you kill fast never gets to hit you. In defense-style zombie games the priority flips: build your economy in the first easy waves, because nearly every run is lost to a late wave you could not afford to answer.

Playing zombie games in a browser instead of buying one

Browser zombie games will not replace a full survival sim — they are shorter, lighter and built to be picked up in a single sitting. That is the point. There is nothing to install, they run on a school or work laptop, and a run usually fits into a break. The trade-off is scope: expect a single map, a wave counter and an upgrade screen rather than a campaign. If you want the full experience afterwards, the famous titles further down this page are the ones to look at on Steam or console — we do not host those, and this page is honest about the difference.

Zombie Games — Free Zombie Survival, Shooter & Defense Games Online — FAQ

What are the best free zombie games I can play online?

This collection is our pick: Zombie Shooter Game and Super Zombie Shooter for straight horde shooting, Survival - Zombie Outbreak Multiplayer and Zombie Den: The Lone Survivor for survival, Tower Defense Zombies and Mutant Plants Vs Zombie for defense, and Supercars Zombie Driving if you want something lighter. All of them play free in the browser here.

Can I play zombie games free in my browser with no download?

Yes. Every zombie game linked on this page runs directly in your browser on JoyForGame — no download, no install and no account. Click a title and it loads.

Is Plants vs. Zombies playable here?

No. Plants vs. Zombies is a paid PopCap/EA game and we do not host it. What we do have is the same lane-defense loop in free browser games such as Mutant Plants Vs Zombie and Merge Plants and Zombies.

Are there multiplayer zombie games in a browser?

Some browser zombie games do support online play — Survival - Zombie Outbreak Multiplayer in this collection is the multiplayer pick. Most of the rest are single-player wave and defense games.

What is the difference between zombie survival and zombie tower defense?

In zombie survival you control a character directly and staying alive depends on your movement and aim. In zombie tower defense you place and upgrade defenses instead, so the game is about economy and positioning — you decide where the horde dies rather than shooting it yourself.

Are these zombie games scary?

It varies a lot. Some are cartoon or stickman-styled and barely spooky, while the survival-horror flavored ones lean on dark corridors and gore. If you want the scarier end, look at our horror games collection; if you want it light, start with Noob vs Zombie or Stick vs Zombies.
